Artist Statement

My reason for doing this project is the simple fact that I find it incredibly interesting in all of its aspects, creating, viewing, sharing. The idea came to me after viewing the Post Secret blog and wanting to know more about these people and have them share their stories specifically with me, I’ve always been interested in people’s stories. For my own project I decided to have people answer personal questions I asked them, pick a quote from one of their answers and have them display it on their body or on another found material. The component of anonymity came into play in the fact that the viewer would see the answer, but not know the question that was asked. I started by creating a list of questions and sat down with my sister and started my first "interview." She was my first experiment. I decided on lighting and backdrop, collected writing materials and made up my mind that everything else would be left up to my subject because, ultimately, it was their photo. Generally, I’m a woman of few words and the art of conversation is not one that I’m particularly good at, so this was a huge learning experience for me on how to interact with my subjects and make them, and myself, feel comfortable so that I could get the most out of them. The people who allowed me to work them provided me with incredible stuff and this series has turned out better than I ever expected it to.
